Sweet potato gnocchi

This month when my Gourmet magazine arrived, I was in the mood for fall eating and was very inspired by this recipe for Sweet potato gnocchi with chestnuts and sage.  Thing is I have never made gnocchi myself and the recipe sounded so good that my expectations were very high. Let’s just say that Gourmet’s photo was much better. But a little disappointment and failed brown butter sauce aside, I was very proud of myself for making the attempt.

And gnocchi- you have not seen the last of me…

Apple picking

It is my belief that if your boyfriend ever suggests something outdoorsy and potentially romantic, you should always take him up on it. Which is how I found myself in upstate New York this week at Warwick Valley Winery and Orchard. Truth be told I think it was more the wine tasting than the apple picking that piqued his interest, but I still got my outdoorsy fix. We did it in the correct order, starting things off with a tasting 6 wines and the most delicious hard cider ever made, and even a sip of grappa, and then stumbled our way through the orchard. It was probably the last warm day of the year, and a great way to spend it.

The last  few days I have been trying to figure out what in the world to do with all the apples we got. I have a feeling using up the wine won’t be much of a problem.

Look what I found when we went out for my friend Kate’s birthday at The Flying Cow in Williamsburg.

A steak after my own heart.

Natalie Portman at TFF

natalie-portman-lanvin

Dear Natalie, If you keep making such gorgeous fashion choices like the Lanvin frock you wore at the Toronto premiere of Love and Other Possible Pursuits, I will have to consider myself your style stalker. I mean, you are kind of asking for it by wearing my favorite color, pairing it with understated shoes, oomph-ing it back up with bright lipstick and then standing there looking all innocent. However I don’t know how I feel about the earrings. They might be too plastic-y and “claire’s” looking.. I’ll get back to you. Thanks.

Grey matter(s)

One of the things I love/hate about the fashion industry is the fact that colors are reintroduced with the same wild enthusiasm season after season. “go for sunny yellow this summer” “pink is so feminine!” or “gray is the new black” As if no one has ever worn anything but black.

And the truth is, I find myself playing along every year. Every september I seem to fall in love with heather grey all over again. I want to crawl into this bedding from the toast catalogue, love this burberry sweater with a well placed fair isle pattern, and of course Heidi, with the blunt bangs I have always coveted. Grey just has a cozy warmth to it and looks great with punches of color. Im even thinking these curtains might look nice in my apartment this fall…

colorscopeI like this little color grid from one of my favorite creatively inspiring shops and personal pocketbook drainer- The Paper Source. The shades are so pretty and I picked fuchsia which seems pretty accurate..

Peach tart

peach pieces

peaches and cream

One of that saddest parts of summer coming to a close is bidding goodbye to peaches. They are my all time favorite fruit, and though you can eat them year round, who would want to when the flavor they pack in June and July is so astoundingly good?

I came across this recipe for a no-bake peaches and cream tart with a ginger snap crust and fell in love. The blogger who thought it up had a few kitchen snafus which in my book only makes me want to try it out more.

PEACH CREME WITH GINGERSNAP CRUST // The science of this pie, is that the lemon reacts with the milk products to help the filling firm up. So be sure to give it ample time to do it’s thing before serving.

The Crust //
10 oz. Gingersnap Cookies
3 Tbsp. Butter

The Filling//
1 14 oz. Can Organic Sweetened Condensed Milk, lowfat optional
½ Cup Crème Fraiche
¼ Cup Fresh Lemon Juice
1 tbsp. Cinnamon
1 ¼ Cup Ripe Peaches, Peeled and Diced

1. In a food processor, grind the gingersnap cookies. Add the butter and pulse to combine.
2. Press the cookie mixture evenly into the sides and bottom of a 9’’ glass pie pan. Pop this in the freezer while preparing the filling.
3. In a bowl, whisk the condensed milk, crème fraiche, lemon juice, and cinnamon together. Give the peach pieces a good squeeze in your fist to crush them up a bit, and add to the cream mixture. Whisk together. Add the filling to the chilled cookie crust.
4. Let the pie firm up in the fridge for at LEAST 4 hours. We put ours in the freezer, and then let it sit for a bit before serving.

Patrick Swayze

September 15, 2009

How sad to hear the news of Patrick Swayze passing today. I must say he was probably my first celeb crush as I watched Dirty Dancing countless times and “johnny” was the quintessential bad boy  with a heart of gold. Sigh.. a couple of my favorite scenes as an homage. xo PS..you will be missed.

He kisses her on the nose right before the spin. Gets me every time!

Phonebook dress

phonebook dress

I often wonder what the point of telephone books is these days. Here’s one fab idea by Jolis Paons… which reminds me: when is the “make clothes out of non fabric” episode of Project Runway?

** Update** HOLY COW! Did I call that or what? Right after I posted this there was an episode of project runway where they made dresses out of newspaper. I swear I didn’t know! Perhaps I’m psychic?

Found heart: stone

September 12, 2009

heart of stone

Though Omaha Nebraska is not the most likely Labor day weekend destination, I had the most delightful getaway there last weekend. Gay wedding in Iowa, a Conor Oberst sighting, sunny days by the pool, plenty of steak and fresh corn and lots (probably too much) beer fueled dance parties.

…and a little “found heart” spotting!

bjorn

A friend sent me this pic of a chipped heart on her door stoop and it is so perfect its really remarkable. The adorable chubby hand just makes it that much better. I want to gobble it up.

Then a whole 200 miles away I was angrily walking home from the subway and came across this little guy.

Not as perfect but similar.

Geeez we should have a combined photo blog or something…

Bikes in the burg

September 3, 2009

bikes galore

I have to admit upfront that I didn’t take this pic. I stole it from my friends facebook page. I love it because it speaks worlds about the neighborhood I live in. Its from the last official Pool Party  of the summer. (for those who don’t know what that means: its a free concert on the water in Williamsburg.) The cyclists and their custom made bikes are taking over the future.. we need more bike parking I tell you!

Bear on a ladder

free bear

I might be alone here, but I think this photo of a bear climbing a ladder is adorable and hilarious. It wandered down into a skate park in Colorado and got stuck overnight. Officials lowered this ladder and the bear went on its merry way back to the forest. Back to its Berenstain family.
