Sea at sunset

I cant believe how long it has been since my last post. I went off the grid last week on  a short little vaca back to my hometown. Despite a little rain shower it was probably the most perfect 3 days of the whole summer. A little beach time, some serene sunsets, ice cream, lobsta.. the whole shebang.

Dove- Evolution

Having worked on many a photo shoot I can say that this video is exceedingly accurate. It is cool what Dove is doing to change our idea of beauty. And their ice cream bars are nothing short of delicious.

Picasso

My mom sent this to me and I love it. Its amazing to see the breadth of Picasso’s work. Its also really satisfying to type a word like “breadth” cause it looks wrong but its not. Its not as satisfying to say, incidentally.

Some birds to go along with my “bees” inspiration. I love this idea of flight and nesting that birds have. Right now I identify with more of the nesting side as I have a bad cold and have barely left the house today. I watched 3 episodes of that Tori Spelling show, one bad Ricki Lake movie, and Sleepless in Seattle for the umpteenth time. I think all of them made me cry at some point. (Don’t judge me. I’m a sap like that.) Then I ordered mexican food and snapped at the guy for taking too long. Very eventful day.

Geez I hope I get better soon..

Post-it love

August 6, 2009

What a cute vid about office love. It seems as though paper is becoming extinct and this reminds you of the classic nature of the lowly post-it. I tried not to cringe when I thought of the wastefulness. I think the romantic in me beat out the environmentalist on this one.

Bees

August 4, 2009

Sometimes I spot a thing that I didn’t even know I was into but it just keeps following me around until I submit to liking it.

But enough about my love life. Zing!

For serious: I’m liking bees as a design icon recently and have been seeing bee and hive inspiration popping up everywhere. They are responsible for about 35% of the food we eat, and fuhgettabout their huge effect on the plant life…

So why not pay an homage to them? And here’s some real info about them

I never considered myself a Lilly Pulitzer girl.. but (gulp) I kinda love this bee-print bikini. Just in time for the last of the season swim in icy waters of the Atlantic. Really what I do is not swimming per se, its really called “swimping.” (Consider that term coined. You heard it here first) Despite a plethora of beach trips I have only submerged my body once this summer. I just do the good ol’ “spash and pat” made famous by old ladies and prissy moms alike. Sometimes I even do a hair dip. It gets the job done for us swimpers out there.

Sweet Dreams

This is almost 10 minutes long but worth it if you are in the mood for a very imaginative little animation.

Purple basil

basil

I picked up some treasures at the Greenmarket in Union Square on Wednesday and have been putting this delicate basil on everything. Olive loaf bruschetta with fresh ricotta and tomatoes… sauteed summer squash with toasted almonds and Parmesan…

It doesn’t wilt or brown and the leaves are so tiny there is no chopping required. Gotta love those farmers and their markets..

I have also been perousing New York Time’s 101 simple salads. Very inspiring for healthy summer nibbling.

Bright Star

August 2, 2009

Before it hit theaters, I was anxiously awaiting “500 Days of Summer.” Since the mister had affectionately nicknamed it “500 Years of Boredom” I figured this was one I should probably see without him. And let me tell you.. it is my kind of movie. Just romcom enough that it fulfills that cheesy side of me, but quirky enough that it keeps you giggling. And I predict that Joseph Gordon Levitt is going to increase his female following exponentially after this film. And this doesn’t hurt either. Zooey Deschanel is adorable as usual and I was totally coveting her haircut the entire time. It wasn’t ground breaking, but it is a cute concept and speaks to the dating generation in a really witty way. I think I might have even convinced the mister to give it a try!

Anyway, let me get to the point…

The preview before 500 Days that really had me swooning was Bright Star. I am a sucker for anything that even resembles a period film and then add to that Jane Campion as writer and director  of a story about my fave poet John Keats?! Swoooon.

Its the guy from Perfume (I think I might be alone in liking that movie) and the girl known for breaking up Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe’s Marriage: Abbie Cornish. Im happy to see that this film might eclipse her role as home wrecker seeing as she is captivating in the preview. The girl next to me in the theater called her fat, but I like to see a bit of curve in the corset otherwise its not believable.

Martha’s Vineyard

Last weekend I had a very delightful time on the isle of Martha’s Vineyard with a gaggle of some of my favorite girls. Despite a minor setback with an alcohol/ food poisoning incident (don’t ask) it was the stuff that summer getaways are made of. On the foggy days we poked around the local shops and collected veggies at the farmers market. At night we took showers in the outdoors, cooked dinner as a group and danced until the wee hours at the local watering hole. When the sun finally peeked out, everyone went scrambling for their swimsuits and headed to the beach. There’s just something about that island where the the peaches seem more flavorful, the gardens more lush, the air is fresher… and the weekend is never long enough.
